Finland hosts meeting of Nordic and Baltic student organisations – theme is internationalisation and student mobility in higher education

The National Union of Students in Finnish Universities of Applied Sciences (SAMOK) and the National Union of University Students in Finland (SYL) host the meeting of the NOM cooperation network (Nordic Presidential Meeting, Nordiskt Ordförande Møte in Danish) of Nordic and Baltic student organisations in Helsinki between 1 and 4 October 2026.

The purpose of the event is to bring together different actors from Nordic and Baltic student organisations to receive training and to discuss common areas for advocacy in the umbrella organisation European Students’ Union (ESU), at the level of the Nordic and Baltic countries, and in the EU. This meeting will also celebrate the 80th anniversary of NOM cooperation, as the first meeting of the network was held in 1946 in Aarhus, Denmark.

The key themes of the Helsinki meeting are internationalisation, immigration and mobility in higher education. Student mobility and international exchange programmes provide vital opportunities to learn from others and build networks across borders. The changing global political situation is also reflected in these themes and increasingly affects higher education communities and students’ everyday lives.

In the current situation, Nordic and Baltic cooperation is invaluable. The event brings together the national student organisations of the Nordic and Baltic countries, offering a unique forum for sharing national perspectives and learning from others. Through cooperation, the organisations can together and across national borders discuss solutions to common challenges faced by students.

The student unions participating in the NOM meeting are from Finland (SAMOK and SYL), the Faroe Islands (MFS), Greenland (ILI ILI and AVALAK), Iceland (LÍS), Latvia (LSA), Lithuania (LSS), Norway (NSO), Sweden (SFS), Denmark (DSF) and Estonia (EÜL).

The NOM meeting in Helsinki will be organised in cooperation with ISIC Nordics & Netherlands, which represents the international ISIC student card in the Nordic countries and the Netherlands.
