The General Assembly of the National Union of University Students in Finland (SYL), representing all of Finland’s close to 132,000 university students, has elected SYL’s 2017 Board. The meeting also decided on next year’s plan of work as well as SYL’s new policy paper.
SYL’s President for 2017 is Riina Lumme, 24, the Student Union of the University of Turku (TYY), student of Political Science.
The General Assembly also elected six board members:

Maria Loima (Student Union of the University of Helsinki, HYY)
Jyri Lähdemaa (Student Union of the University of Turku, TYY)
Jimmy Nylund (Aalto University Student Union, AYY)
Jani Sillanpää (Student Union of Tampere University of Technology, TTYY)
Newly elected President Riina Lumme says they wants to see students actively building the future and defending lifelong learning. “During Finland’s centenary celebration, students should be seen and heard as experts on education and as the voice of their generation. We must develop Finnish education policy with a holistic view. Everyone must be entitled to equal opportunities for lifelong learning,” says Riina Lumme.
SYL’s General Assembly in its statement underlined that decision makers must start evaluating the generational consequences of their political decisions. The General Assembly encouraged all decision makers to implement brave and sustainable future policy, and to invest in young and future generations, since that is investing in the future. SYL’s General Assembly also noted that the only sustainable advocacy for university students in the future is one that takes into account also future generations of students.
The General Assembly of the National Union of University Students in Finland (SYL) was held in Korpilampi, Espoo on Friday and Saturday 18–19 November.
