The members of the National Union of University Students in Finland’s (SYL) Climate Network for the 2026–2027 term have been selected. The objective of the Climate Network is to develop the climate action by SYL and student unions and to strengthen the role of students in the work against the climate crisis. The Climate Network consists of actors in the student unions who brainstorm and develop the climate impacts of the student movement, participate in climate action as an advisory body and support the board in climate action.
Veronika Koukharenko (HYY) was elected chair of the Climate Network.
“Humanity is not separate from the natural world. And yet, we act surprised when environmental damage affects our societies negatively. When social and environmental issues are so deeply intertwined, we cannot afford to address them separately. Climate and sustainability are therefore not separate from student wellbeing or student politics. That is why students must have a real say in what kind of world is being built.
The research and thinking happening within universities is necessary for imagining alternatives, navigating complexity, considering various perspectives and bringing about fairer futures without reproducing old injustices or creating new ones. Transformation is not an easy task, but we, students, are committed to doing that work.
The climate network is here to make sure that voice is heard and acted upon. Our role is to bring different perspectives from across the student unions together, to move forward collectively and support each other in that work. We are here to bring the student voice into the policy spaces where the future is being decided, for we are the ones who will inherit the consequences of the decisions made today.”
