The National Union of University Students in Finland (SYL) and The National Union of Students in Finnish Universities of Applied Sciences (SAMOK) attended the 90th Board Meeting of the European Students’ Union (ESU) in Vienna, Austria during 1.-7. of December. The Board Meeting was hosted by the Österreichische Hochschüler_innenschaft (Austrian National Union of Students).
The Seminar Days during the upcoming Board Meeting focused on the topic of effective student data collection, compiling data into studies and students’ rights to data privacy. In Austria, student social surveys cover a wide range of topics and are the most important sources of information and decision-making in higher education policy.
The Board Meeting itself involved a range of decisions regarding ESU’s stances on quality in higher education, active citizenship education, Multiannual Financial Framework, Blended Intensive Programmes, contract cheating and LGBTIQ students’ rights. The Board Meeting also accepted ESU’s next three-year financial strategy.
In the Board Meeting, three resolutions were passed that SYL and SAMOK were involved in:
- Resolution on easing visa-based access to studies abroad for Palestinian students
- Resolution on the Finnish government to ensure funding for the objectives of its Vision for Higher Education and Research
- Resolution on protecting non-EU/EEA international students’ rights in Northern Europe
