The General Assembly of the National Union of University Students in Finland (SYL), which represents the approximately 130,000 students at Finnish universities, has elected a new Board for 2023. The General Assembly also made decisions on next year’s Plan of Work and SYL’s finances.
The new SYL President is Lotta Leinonen, 24, from Oulu University Student Union.
As well as the President, the General Assembly also elected six Board Members:
Jenni Suutari (JYY)
Pauliina Ryökäs (ISYY)
Sonja Naalisvaara (HYY)
Roosa Grönberg (LTKY)
Antti Regelin (AYY)
Jenny Kasongo (Vasop)
‘We have a really inspiring board, with great personalities and a wide range of skills. We will go out with great energy to defend the interests of students in next spring’s parliamentary elections’, the new President Lotta Leinonen says.
The General Assembly of SYL has issued a declaration calling for a commitment to human rights and support for students fleeing war and persecution.
‘The student movement is increasingly worried about the dividing lines being drawn and the situation international students face during times of crisis. Despite the difficult international political situation and hardening attitudes, we must keep an open mind towards internationalism and improve the status of the foreign students arriving in Finland and those already here’, says Leinonen.
SYL’s General Assembly was held at Hotel Korpilampi in Espoo on Friday and Saturday 18–19 November. The full Resolution from the General Assembly can be read on SYL’s website: www.syl.fi/en/news.
