Konstantin Kouzmitchev, President of the National Union of University Students in Finland to celebrate Finnish independence at the Presidential Palace – wearing a bow tie made of recycled materials

Konstantin Kouzmitchev, the President of the National Union of University Students in Finland (SYL), will be attending the Independence Day reception of President of the Republic Sauli Niinistö and Doctor in spe Jenni Haukio at the Presidential Palace.

‘Students have played a key role in the creation of the Finnish welfare state. It is great that SYL remains influential even a century after its inception, and that young people are noticed’, says Kouzmitchev.

In summer 2022, the long-awaited SYL centenary was organised in the Little Finlandia event centre in Helsinki. This is also shown in Kouzmitchev’s clothing: his pocket handkerchief and bow tie are made of fabric left over from a photography backdrop used at the event with SYL’s centenary colours. Designer Aino Käki made the handkerchief and bow tie.

‘Sustainability and a more sustainable lifestyle are increasingly important to students. Society must make a fundamental change towards more sustainable production, global responsibility and the circular economy, moving away from overconsumption and an unsustainable way of consuming natural resources’, says Kouzmitchev.
