The Ministry of Education and Culture has launched a study on the automatic membership of student unions. The National Union of University Students in Finland (SYL) points out that the matter has already been examined twice this decade and there is no need to change the law.
“There are no conditions for changing the Universities Act. Automatic membership gives autonomous student unions the means to carry out the tasks prescribed by law for the university community and Finnish democracy,” says Roope Tukia, Secretary General of SYL.
The applicable legislation has not changed between the studies. SYL is happy to provide additional information to support the study and the work of the person conducting it, and to engage in an active dialogue with stakeholders.
“We will provide all the support and additional information needed to support the study. We are always ready to engage in an active and constructive dialogue. I believe that the 100-year history of the student movement and its significant role in the development of Finnish society and the academic world today will also be recognised in this study,” continues Tukia.
SYL points out that student unions are a central part of Finnish society and the autonomy of universities. They have been strengthening democracy for more than a hundred years. SYL and the student unions continue to work proudly for Finland, democracy and university students.
A student union is a body governed by public law under the Universities Act, which carries out the statutory tasks assigned to it. It is part of its university’s autonomy.
