At its meeting on 20 May 2022, the board of the National Union of University Students in Finland (SYL) decided that the union will switch to entirely plant-based food in all catering related to its operations. The decision is based on the policy paper adopted by the General Assembly of SYL, according to which the union is committed to promoting a sustainable future. The policy paper also affirms SYL’s commitment to combating climate change and the broader environmental crisis by making its activities more sustainable.
“In addition to advocacy, promoting sustainability also demands concrete action within our organisation. We consider it important that SYL also plays its part in combating climate change,” says SYL’s President Konstantin Kouzmitchev on the decision.
According to the board’s decision, the transition to fully plant-based food in catering will be made in phases and completed by the end of 2023. The decision will first apply to internal events of SYL’s office, then to activities held for student unions, and finally to stakeholder events. Up until now, SYL only offered vegetarian food in connection with its activities.
